SHAVING HISTORY

The history of shaving began in ancient Egypt, where men shaved their beards and heads for both religious and climatic reasons. The procedure was very important and the presence of hair was a sign of neglect.

In Greece it is rumoured that Alexander the Great introduced the practice of shaving, whose role may have been overestimated, but he certainly helped a lot in its spread. In the Roman Empire, as well as in ancient Greece, beards were symbols of wisdom, maturity and virility. However, over time in the Roman Empire, beards became the distinguishing feature of slaves, servants and barbarians.

The basic shaving tool, the modern shaving brush was invented during the 1750s and is attributed to France. Known as the French blaucireau brush or in simple Greek badger. The quality of each brush varies and is proportional to the materials used to make it. Handles are usually made of ivory, silver, gold, crystal or porcelain. The most expensive brushes used to date are made with badger hair and some more accessible to the general public with horsehair.

The first disposable razor was the flint blade, with a sharp edge that soon became loose and its appearance dates back to 30,000 BC. Of course, it is almost certain that its history begins during the Stone Age, where cave paintings show Neanderthal man using shells as tweezers to remove unwanted hair.

In the early 1800s and 1900s the golden age of the falsetto was invented and made barber shops a luxury in a man’s life. In Greece, the first barbershops appeared which had a social role, as they were a place where men could discuss sports, social and political issues. At the end of the 18th century in the USA and Europe men began to appear with beards and moustaches.

We at THE LORD OF BLADES recommend the traditional London shave that starts with a facial scrub to remove dead cells. The next and very important step is the use of a warm compress to soften the skin. Then we do a relaxing facial massage with a special oil (pre save oil) that we always use before each shave. Immediately afterwards, we apply warm compress again to soften the beard and apply the foam with the brush to lift the hair, so that the clipper glides better and we get a deeper shave. After we’re done, we use a cold compress to momentarily close the pores and prevent irritation. We follow up with an after shave balm and moisturizer for a better skin result. Finally, the cologne of the client’s choice after some special suggestion of ours, completes the process, a traditional shave.
